Naming and Classification
The Lavender or botanically speaking Lavandula group of plants is called a genus they belong to a family of plants called the Lamiacae. This means ‘lipped’ and if you look closely at the flower head you can see why.

The name Lavender comes from the Latin lavare meaning to wash and the Romans used it to scent their baths

The genus Lavandula contains over 39 species and hundreds of hybrids.
The genus has been divided into 8 sections 2 of these sections contain the massive range of our best lavenders for gardens.

with two hybrids of the above
- L. x intermedia ( L. angustifolia crossed with L. latifolia )

And Section 3 stoechas
The species are:
- L. stoechas pedunculata
- L. stoechas stoechas
- L. stoechas viridis
With masses of hybrids of the above.
